Chrysophyllum albidum (commonly known as white star apple or African cherry) is a forest fruit tree commonly found throughout tropical Africa. Amongst the Igbo tribes of Nigeria, it is called “udara” or “udala” while the Yoruba tribes call it Agbalumo.

Udara trees bear ripe, yellow fruits from December to March (dry season). Udaras are sweet and sour. They can be eaten fresh or stewed. They have a pink-colored pulp that is used to make juice, jams, syrup, marmalade, and soft drinks. The oil from African star apple seeds is used for medicinal purposes, as it is rich in nutrients and natural antioxidants. Experts on nutrition affirm its uncommon nutritional benefits as well as its efficacy in the prevention and management of diabetes and heart diseases. It is has high Vitamin C content, an essential nutrient involved in the repair of tissue and the enzymatic production of certain neurotransmitters. Vitamin C is required for the functioning of several enzymes and is important for immune system function.
